Although a typology of architecture unique to Kyoto dedicated to hospitality was developed over hundreds of years, it is simply called the “tea house (ochaya).” However, this four-story building that resembles an ochaya is like no other. Sequential programs typically arranged horizontally are rearranged vertically while respecting the traditional formality. It is, in a sense, a vertical tea house.
